Incident Command Systems
The course aims to enable course attendees to efficiently operate using the Incident Command System in supervisory roles on expanding incidents. The course also aims to provide Incident Command System organisation appropriate to the complexity of the incident or event and the usage to manage an incident or event.

Purpose of the course:

The purpose of the course is to further introduce participants to Incident Command Systems by explaining leadership and management, delegation of authority and management of objectives, functional areas and positions, briefings, organisational flexibility, transfer of command and course summary.

Assessment Criteria

  After completion of this course, participants will: Participant will be assessed on the following criteria:
  1) Describe how the National Incident Management System Command and Management component supports the management of expanding incidents Describe and discuss critically how National Incident Management System Command and Management component supports the management of expanding incidents, the incident/event management process for supervisors and expanding incidents as prescribed by the Incident Command System and finally the use of the Incident Command Systems in a written assignment.
  2) Describe the incident/event management process for supervisors and expanding incidents as prescribed by the Incident Command System. Describe and discuss critically how National Incident Management System Command and Management component supports the management of expanding incidents, the incident/event management process for supervisors and expanding incidents as prescribed by the Incident Command System and finally the use of the Incident Command Systems in a written assignment.
  3) Be able to discuss and explain the use of the Incident Command System. Describe and discuss critically how National Incident Management System Command and Management component supports the management of expanding incidents, the incident/event management process for supervisors and expanding incidents as prescribed by the Incident Command System and finally the use of the Incident Command Systems in a written assignment.
  4) Be able to apply what they have learned and implement the incident management process prescribed by the Incident Command System on a simulated expanding incident. Apply what they have learned in the course and successfully implement the incident management process as well as develop an Incident Action Plan during a simulation exercise.
  5) Develop an Incident Action Plan for a simulated incident. Apply what they have learned in the course and successfully implement the incident management process as well as develop an Incident Action Plan during a simulation exercise.

 

Assessment: 
Class practical’s and written assignment
Method of assessment: 
Students will be asked to solve problems through practical exercise by applying the principles and knowledge that they have acquired after each theoretical contact sessions. This will be done on the last day of the course. Additionally, to the above, students will have to submit a written essay (10-15_ pages) within two months after the last day of the course (pass rate 50%), which will be deemed as final assessment. The elements stated above will form the basis of this assessment
