The Introduction to Botanical Latin will enable students to understand the basic system according to which flora is named.

Assessment Criteria

  After completion of this course, participants will: Participant will be assessed on the following criteria:
1. Know the botanical names of the plants in their prescribed vocabulary lists I know the students have achieved the desired outcome when they are able to give the Botanical names of the plants in their prescribed lists given a description or its vernacular designation
2. Be able to reduce the botanical names of the plants in their prescribed vocabulary lists to their constituent parts, be able to name these constituent parts and understand the function of each I know the students have achieved the desired outcome when they are able to disassemble the Botanical names of the plants in their prescribed lists into their constituent parts, analyse each constituent part and generate a general meaning of the plant name by reassembling the plant name
3. Understand the system according to which plants are given scientific names I know the students have achieved the desired outcome when they are able to explain the system according to which plants are given scientific names and can place species in the correct taxonomical category (genera, families, orders, etc.) given the scientific name
4. Be able to derive by approximation the meaning of botanical names of the plants not in their prescribed vocabulary lists with the use of a dictionary I know the students have achieved the desired outcome when they are able to generate an approximate meaning of plant names not in their prescribed lists with the help of a dictionary

 

Assessment: 
50% average mark for a test and two assignments.
Method of assessment: 
Two written assignments and one final test.
