A need was identified in the market for a short course in the desktop publishing (DTP) software application Adobe Illustrator CC that can provide participants with the basic skills and knowledge to create graphic design vector images and items (such as logos, business cards, vector images, animated GIFs and covers for magazines, books, CDs, DVDs for both print and digital formats).

Purpose of the course:

After completing this short course participants will be able to create vector images and other graphic design items.

Assessment Criteria

For Outcome 1:


Upon successful completion of this short course, participants will have the scope of knowledge and informed understanding/ability to use the desktop publishing (DTP) software application Adobe Illustrator CC to create vector images and to design various types of graphic design items.  The outcomes required to achieve this include:

  1. a basic understanding of the appropriate software and the ability to apply various methods and procedures required by the given task;
  2. the ability to gather and screen information based on its relevance and importance to the given task, and to apply effective processes of analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and creative expression;
  3. the ability to identify, evaluate and solve routine problems and new problems in the context of the given task.


Participants must be able to identify, discuss, distinguish and implement appropriate software tools, standard methods and/or procedures in different contexts to create vector images and to design various types of graphic design items.

For Outcome 2:  


Participants must be able to access, process and manage information in order to produce a creative and original entity of communicating information via the use of computer software related design, in particular via Adobe Illustrator CC.


For Outcome 3:


Participants must be able to prioritise options to successfully solve different contextual problems pertaining to the creation of vector images and the design of various types of graphic design items.



It should be noted that students are obliged to attend at least 5 of the 6 contact classes to successfully pass the course. Furthermore, a participant must attain an average mark of 50% for the relevant assessment in order to pass the course. Any statement (“transcript”, letter of attendance, receipt, or any other document bearing a NWU emblem) must be treated in the same manner as a certificate – i.e. issued ONLY via the approved NWU system/route/protocol. The final assessment of this short course is to be moderated.
Method of assessment: 
Assessment will be carried out in the form of one practical assignment to be completed in the participant's own time upon completion of the short course.
