English for Academic Purposes (CEF Level B2)
This course is especially aimed at Honours and postgraduate participants who wish to improve their proficiency in Academic English. It is offered at intermediate/B2 level in terms of the Common European Framework (CEF) for Languages levels (see Addendum). The course integrates the four main skills and academic language, and features authentic texts from academic and higher education books. It also offers video and audio content, including extracts from lectures, participant presentations and seminar discussions. It provides practical help in developing essential skills for academic study, such as critical thinking, effective note-taking and referencing, summarizing and paraphrasing, and avoiding plagiarism. Participants are encouraged to study independently and to apply the course content to their chosen discipline.
The aim of the course is to equip participants (especially Honours and postgraduate ones) with the necessary skills in Academic English at intermediate/B2 level (see Addendum) in order to enable them to listen, speak, read and write effectively in an academic environment.
Participants must write a Placement Test so that it can be established whether the course is appropriate for them. The test to be administered is the Oxford English Placement Test. which reliably places participants in an appropriate course. The test has been calibrated against the levels system provided by the CEF

Participants should typically have completed their undergraduate studies and have a satisfactory level of proficiency in English.

Participants will have to pass a test (50%) in order to be awarded a certificate.
Method of assessment:
A written and oral Academic English test will be administered.
