Presentation Basics using MS Powerpoint
Computer literacy has become a prerequisite for almost any job in the modern office environment, and as such, it is more important than ever before to ensure that people have the knowledge and skills to utilise the latest technology effectively and efficiently, not only for their own benefit, but also for the benefit of their businesses.Business require presentation skills at all job levels and MS PowerPoint is widely used.

Purpose of the course:

The purpose of this 2-day course is to introduce delegates to the best practices in creating presentations to empower them to create and edit presentations in their work environment.

Understand the basic elements of electronic presentations.
  • Define use of presentation software in terms of its purpose and use
  • Launch the application launched from the task bar, list of programmes or clicking on the icon on the desktop.
  • Explain the benefits and pitfalls of using electronic software for presentations.
  • Understand and explain the ribbon concept.
  • Work with presentations
  • Describe the parts of the presentation software window in terms of their features and use.
  • Create a new presentation.
  • Save the presentation with a specific name in a specific folder.
  • Open an existing presentation.
  • Save a presentation in a different format.
Format various aspects of a presentation
  • Use the commands in the Slides group to change the appearance of the slide
  • Apply a layout to each slide.
  • Apply a design style to the presentation.
  • Insert a new slide.
  • Use the commands in the Font group to change the appearance of the font
  • Change font types, sizes and colours.
  •  Add or change alignment.
  • Use bold, Italic and underline to enhance the appearance of text.
  • Replicate formatting efficiently by using the Format painter.
  • Use Find and Replace is to make changes to an existing presentation.
  • Use the commands in the Paragraph group to change the appearance of the paragraph
  • Set, reset, remove, add tabs to an existing document.
  • Apply and remove bullets/numbers to a list.
  • Add borders and shading to a paragraph to enhance the appearance.
  • Change paragraph spacing according to requirements.
Insert an object in a document
  • Insert and format all of the following objects:
  • Pictures.
  • Clip art.
  • Various shapes.
  • Smart Art.
  • Charts.
  • Use the context specific menu tab to format the object.
  • Change the orientation of an object.
  • Change the different attributes of an object.
  • Re-align objects
  • Import objects from other file formats.
  • Copy an image to the masterslide
  • Move, copy, delete objects.
Prepare an organisational chart
  • Create and modify organisational charts
  • Create a new organisational chart according to specified information.
  • Add and remove hierarchical elements.
  • Modify existing hierarchical elements.
Enhance a presentation
  • Animation and transition effect.
  • Customise the slide show.
  • Add animation to a specific slide.
  • Add transition to a slide.
  • Change the order of appearance of the different elements on a slide.
  • Add hyperlinks and animation buttons.
  • Sort slides in a different order.
  • Hide slides so that they are not part of a presentation.
  • Add notes to be used by the presenter.
  • Use the different view options.
Add media to a slide show
  • Add audio and video to a slide show
  • Add audio or video clips to a slide show
  • Set the timing for specific slides in the show.
Print a slide show
  • Print notes or hand-outs

Assessment: 
Summative assessment: Small practical self-evaluated tests on completion of each section. Formal assessment: Attendees have to complete a practical skills test.
Method of assessment: 
A 1 hour practical on-line skills test.
