Geography map work
Teachers that mark the Grade 12 examination scripts and Department of Education subject advisors identify the lack of map skills and interpretation as an area where candidates sitting for the geography examination experience the most problems.

Purpose of the course:

The learning program is designed to pay attention to subject knowledge, map reading, aerial photography and interpretation skills as well as teaching methods that can be used to teach map work skills and interpretation in the geography class

Admission requirements:

Admission requirements: 
Geography teachers with a formal education which include the subject geography.
Learning assumed to be in place: 
Tertiary qualification in geography.

Assessment Criteria

  After completion of this course, participants will: Participant will be assessed on the following criteria:
  • Demonstrate  detailed  knowledge and thorough understanding of map reading, aerial photography and interpretation skills.
  • Understand  and explain  the collection and presentation of physical and human structures portrayed on maps  
  • Understand and demonstrate  teaching methods that can be used to teach map work skills and  aerial photography interpretation in the geography class that is required within the context of the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply gained knowledge with an ethically responsible attitude towards the environment.
  • Demonstrate fundamental knowledge, skills, understanding and insight into  the collection, application  and presentation of map symbols 
  • Interpret and analyse topographical maps and aerial photos
  • Identify evaluate and effectively implement  themes relevant to maps and aerial photography interpretation that support the coherent understanding of concepts, ideas, theories and principles of Geography
  • Demonstrate an ability to apply key terms, concepts, facts, principles, rules and theories of Geography to teach learners at school using maps.


Informal continuous assessment throughout the short learning programme. This will form part of the presentation of the learning programme content in an effort to establish the extent to which attendees demonstrate competencies in applying certain skills. This will be informally tested within group context. A certificate of attendance will be issued.
Method of assessment: 
For this short learning programme no formal summative assessment will be done. Assessment will be informal.
