Interactive Behaviour-Based Coaching
Organisations that do not perform at their peak find that over the long term, they are unable to compete effectively, efficiently, professionally and sustainably at highest levels. In fact, it has become increasingly important for leaders to help organisations to meet challenges such as keeping customers happy, delivering high quality products and services, managing continuous change, retaining top talent, working in collaborative networked organisations, building personal capacity to match performance demands, empowering breakthrough results and reinforcing business practices. Creating a coaching work culture is imperative to helping businesses meet these challenges successfully.

Purpose of the course:

Participants will learn the purpose, approach and outcomes of the interactive behaviour-based coach training intervention. They will gain informed knowledge on the role of personal and company values in great coaching/supervision/leadership. They will realise the importance of emotional maturity and behaviour-based coaching and do a reality check of risk-taking, and the ABC of behaviour. They will have an informed understanding of the essence of change management and learn to do observations/inspections/meetings as well as give feedback on behaviour-based coaching. To accomplish this, they will gain better communication and facilitation. They will do a road map of self-growth plan as interactive behaviour-based coach within the company.

Admission requirements: 
Participants should hold positions of supervision or middle management
Learning assumed to be in place: 
National Senior Certificate or an equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification.

Assessment Criteria

Study Unit 1:

Purpose, Approach and Outcomes of the Interactive Behaviour-Based Coach Training Intervention                                                                                                   

  • Understand the necessity of behaviour-based coaching to enhance safe production performance and service excellence, as well as the integrated coaching approach.                                                                                     
  • Relate and explain the impact and necessity of behaviour-based coaching on sustainable performance excellence.

Study Unit 2:

Setting the Scene: A brief Company Vision & Value Profile

  • Understand the company vision, mission and values, as foundation toward good coaching.
  • Accept, live and promote true values as imperative to good coaching practices and work habits.

Study Unit 3:

The role of personal & company values in great coaching/supervision/ leadership

  • Gain valuable insights of what true values are, how values can impact behaviour, and how to live values that can have a lasting positive influence on people, and establish sound interpersonal relationships
  • Choose, prioritise, integrate and accept true values as part of the attributes of a good coach to lead people masterly

Study Unit 4:

Emotional Maturity and behaviour-based coaching

  • Be more self- and social aware, and will have improved insights and skills of self- management, how to master own emotions, how to emotionally engage with people. and how to establish and manage sound and lasting interpersonal relationships and meaning.
  • Have appropriate insights to be more self-aware, to master own emotions, to manage relationships soundly, and to conduct and behave one-self properly within teams/groups.

A Reality Check of Risk-taking, and the ABC of Behaviour

  • Possess insights of the real world of people’s behaviour (safe, at-risk and sub-standard). The participant will be able to apply the ABC model of behaviour to analyse the root causes of at-risk, safe, sub-standard and accountable behaviour.
  • Have key insights of the ABC of behaviour, how to explain and analyse at-risk and self-persuasive behaviour, and how to guide accountable behaviour.

Study Unit 6:

Essence of Change Management 

  • Possess insights of the changing nature of a work culture, insights of people’s resistance to change, as well as insights of managing change.
  • Have key insights of the human nature to resist change, will be able to explain it, and will have informed knowledge as to how to properly manage change.

Study Unit 7:

Observations/Inspections/Meetings and behaviour-based coaching

  • Possess insights of a best practice observation/meeting process, as well as guidelines to improve observations, as element of great coaching
  • Have key insights of observation/meeting, will be able to explain and promote it, and how to properly perform observation as a good coach.

Study Unit 8:

Feedback and behaviour-based coaching

  • Understand the feedback process, the key attributes of feedback, and how to use feedback as a growth- and learning opportunity, every time
  • Have insights of the positive power of the feedback process, and how to use feedback constructively as a responsible business coach.

Study Unit 9:

Communication and behaviour-based coaching

  • Understand the attributes of good communication, and will possess insights of effective (and ineffective) communication, and how to properly act.
  • Have necessary insights to develop a best practice communication plan, to promote the plan, and to execute the plan

Study Unit 10:

Essence of behaviour-based (safety) coaching

  • Possess informed knowledge of a best practice coaching process, and will be exposed to the fundamentals, guidelines and steps of being a great coach.
  • Have insights of the attributes of a great coach, will be able to explain and promote it, and will be able to live good coaching in practice.

Study Unit 11:

Facilitation and behaviour-based coaching

  • Possess an informed understanding of facilitation as involvement process and accompanied qualities, as well as facilitation guidelines toward conflict resolution and meaningful involvement.
  • Have key insights of facilitation and how to use the power of facilitation during interaction such as meetings, to assist people to discover and to agree on common goals and actions

Study Unit 12:

Thabo’s Journey to Learn to Coach: will he change?

  • Clearly understand and have practical insights in what great IBC Coaching entails, and how to pursue and live great coaching principles and practices.
  • Gain practical insights of clever role play, will have an informed understanding, will digest, and will be able to adopt and follow an example of how a good coach conduct and act, to positively influence people.

Study Unit 13:

Road Map of Self-Growth Plan as interactive behaviour-based coach within the company

  • Be in possession of his/her “personal-developed” practical road map of a self-growth plan as behaviour-based coach, based on personal- and company-related values, which can assist the establishment of a coaching work style within the company.
  • Develop and live, guide and pursue sub-ordinates to develop and live, a self-growth plan as behaviour-based coach, based on sustainable and true values.


To pass the programme, a participant has to obtain a mark of 50% (or more).

Submission of a practical Self-Growth Plan as Behaviour-Based Coach within company
