Short Learning Programme
in
Intensive English for International Students
Prospective NWU students and foreigners who come to South Africa have a need to improve their ability to communicate in English. This course addresses their needs. It develops general and academic skills in in English in an intensive programme of eight weeks

Purpose of the course:

The purpose of the course is to improve participants’ proficiency in English and enable them to listen, speak, read and write in English at an acceptable level. Specific problems in grammar and pronunciation and communication are addressed.

Admission requirements:

Admission requirements: 
Participants must have a basic competence in English. This is not a beginner’s course.
Learning assumed to be in place: 
Participants will typically be persons who have completed their secondary schooling.

Assessment Criteria

  After completion of this course, participants will: Participant will be assessed on the following criteria:
  Use the grammatical system of English correctly in speaking and writing. Use the grammatical system correctly in writing and speaking
  Understand a range of vocabulary items encountered in a variety of reading materials Explain the meaning of selected words and use words appropriately in speaking and writing.
  Read passages and reading materials and comprehend their content Answer detailed questions on reading texts.
  Write paragraphs, letters, short essays and other written pieces such as emails and faxes. Write a variety of assignments such as essays and shorter pieces.
  Take part in communicative activities such as role play, simulations and language games Take an active part in communicative activities in class.
  Speak intelligibly and reasonably fluently Speak fluently in an intelligible manner during a conversation
  Use a dictionary in order to determine the meaning and pronunciation of a word Look up the meaning and pronunciation of a word in a dictionary.

 

Assessment: 
Course mark: 50% & Examination: 50%
Method of assessment: 
Continuous class and homework assessment of assignments and language ability as well as a final proficiency test.
