Short Learning Programme on Mentoring and Coaching

Mentoring and coaching encompass various forms, such as mentoring, peer mentoring, coaching, and mentoring strategies. Moreover, the concept of mentoring extends to adults guiding young individuals. Implementing effective mentoring and coaching approaches fosters a culture of collaborative learning within organisations. This is especially crucial for schools, as it can help mitigate the feelings of professional isolation identified in the existing literature.

Purpose of the course

Participants in this programme will acquire the skills to utilise and integrate the foundational knowledge of key terms, principles, and theories in the field of mentoring and coaching. They will gain mastery in applying research methods, techniques, and technologies relevant to this domain.
Furthermore, they will understand the advantages of mentoring, be familiar with education and trainingrelated legislation that pertains to mentoring, and comprehend the various stakeholders and documentation involved in the mentoring process.
The programme will also cover important aspects such as building effective mentoring relationships, assessing development needs, and evaluating development plans through the analysis of case studies. Participants will have the opportunity to undertake research, write research reports, and develop comprehensive development plans. They will be equipped to select and implement central procedures, operations, and techniques pertinent to mentoring and coaching. Moreover, participants will be able to employ essential inquiry and research methods while effectively communicating their findings, ideas, and opinions using appropriate academic discourse within the field.
Additionally, participants will gain knowledge on information retrieval skills, including identification, critical analysis, synthesis, and independent evaluation of both quantitative and qualitative data. They will be able to thoroughly study existing literature and current research in mentoring and coaching, further enhancing their understanding and expertise in this area.

Integrate knowledge and have a clear understanding,  as well as an ability to effectively utilise, integrate, and apply a comprehensive and structured knowledge base encompassing key terms, principles, and theories in the field of mentoring and coaching. This includes mastering research methods, techniques, and technologies relevant to mentoring and coaching. Moreover, the outcome encompasses a deep understanding of the advantages of mentoring, education and training-related legislation pertinent to mentoring, and the various stakeholders and documentation involved in the mentoring process.
Participants will also showcase their competence in building effective mentoring relationships, assessing development needs, and critically reviewing development plans by analysing case studies and/or conducting research. Additionally, they will demonstrate proficiency in writing research reports and/or compiling and reviewing development plans as part of their scholarly work.
Showcase an understanding of a solid, well-rounded and systematic knowledge base of key terms, principles and theories in the field of mentoring and coaching, including the advantages of mentoring, education and training related legislation applicable to mentoring, role players involved, and documentation in the mentoring process, the mentoring relationship, assessing development needs and reviewing development plans through the use of it in arguments and debates in written (assignments, case studies and/or compiling and reviewing development plans) and/or oral format.
Effectively select and apply central procedures, operations, and techniques, comprehend and utilise the fundamental methods of inquiry and research, and effectively communicate findings, ideas, and opinions through well-structured arguments using appropriate academic discourse within the field of mentoring and coaching.
Showcase an understanding of research methods, techniques and technologies appropriate to the field of mentoring and coaching, and write up the findings in assignments.
Utilise advanced information retrieval skills, including the identification, critical analysis, synthesis, and independent evaluation of quantitative and/or qualitative data, to conduct an in-depth study of the literature and current research in the field of mentoring and coaching.
Undertake a study of the literature in the field of mentoring and coaching by using information retrieval skills (identification, critical analyses, synthesis and independent evaluation of qualitative and/or quantitative data) to write up the findings in assignments, case studies and/or compiling and reviewing development plans.
Demonstrate effective operation within a mentoring and coaching relationship.
Establish and maintain effective mentoring relationships; apply diverse techniques; assess development needs; foster empowerment and self-reflection; and demonstrate ethical and professional conduct.

Method of assessment
Participants will have to write a 3hour open book examination (summative assessment) after attending the course. The elements stated in 2.4 above will form the basis of this assessment.
To pass the programme, a minimum pass rate of 50% needs to be achieved in a 3hour open book examination.
