This course is based on the EIA regulations published in April 2017 and the updated guideline documents issued by the Department of Environmental Affairs. The publication of Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations in 1997 was the first step in the process of making environmental assessment part of day-to-day management in South Africa. It is important that all environmental managers, practitioners and administrators understand the rationale behind the EIA regulations, the processes involved in applying for an environmental authorisation, and the methods and techniques used for conducting environmental impact assessments.
Purpose of the course
The purpose of this short course is to equip participants with an understanding of the EIA regulations and the processes involved in applying for an environmental authorisation. The main objective of the course is to ensure that delegates comprehends the value of the EIA process in providing a reliable basis for sound decision making by meeting legal and other requirements. The course provides guidance to environmental managers of organisations involved in development, consultants involved in doing EIAs, and government officials that have to deal with and approve such assessments to:
• Know which process to adopt for which proposal;
• Manage the two EIA processes from inception to end;
• Steer the process within the timeframes and financial constraints and avoid unnecessary work;
• Meet the legal demands; and
• Contribute to timely and efficient decision making
