The Department of Labour (DoL) requires that all Assistant Occupational Hygienists, Technologist Occupational Hygienists and Occupational Hygienists employed by Approved Inspection Authorities (AIAs) have adequate knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and must be in possession of a valid Legal Knowledge Certificate. The NWU is one of five tertiary institutions in South Africa that was mandated by the DoL to offer the compulsory course on the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations. There are currently many occupational hygienists working for AIAs that still needs to do the course there are a big demand to attend the course. The Occupational Hygiene group at the School of Physiology, Nutrition and Consumer Sciences has been offering an MSc module on the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations since 1997 and has the expertise to educate the current and future occupational hygienists in this field. In doing so, the South African labour force will be better protected in their work environment.
Purpose of the course
The objective of this short course is to ensure that attendees/candidates have adequate knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations as required for Assistant Occupational Hygienists, Technologist Occupational Hygienists and Occupational Hygienists employed by AIAs as per the requirements of the Department of Labour (DoL).

Assessment
Summative assessment: a Final 3-hour examination paper (150 marks) will be written.
Method of assessment
Delegates who achieve 50% or more for the written exam will receive a Legal Knowledge Certificate.

This short course targets Occupational Hygiene specialists, registered at the Southern African Institute for Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH) as Assistant Occupational Hygienists, Technologist Occupational Hygienists or Occupational Hygienists, who are employed by Approved Inspection Authorities (AIAs). AIAs in turn are approved by the Department of Labour.
